Our standard
We design and build PropertyHub.ca to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA — the technical standard referenced by the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and adopted as the federal baseline for Canadian public-facing websites.
We are also committed to the Accessible Canada Act principles: that everyone, regardless of disability, should have barrier-free interaction with the digital services they rely on.
What's already in place
aria-hidden.prefers-reduced-motion.Keyboard shortcuts
Common navigation keys that work site-wide:
- Tab — move to the next interactive element.
- Shift+Tab — move to the previous interactive element.
- Enter / Space — activate the focused button or link.
- Esc — close any open modal, photo gallery, or filter panel.
- / — focus the search bar (where present).
Known limitations
We work to improve the site continuously. Areas we are actively addressing:
- Map polygon labels: screen readers announce neighbourhood polygon names, but the relative geographic context (north / south of a major road) is not yet spoken. We are adding richer ARIA descriptions in 2026.
- Photo galleries: the keyboard navigation works, but a screen-reader-friendly "image 3 of 24" announcement is being added to the gallery overlay.
- Listing-card sub-actions: the "Save," "Share," and "Notes" mini-actions inside a listing card use icon-only buttons. They have ARIA labels but the touch target could be larger for users with motor-skill differences.
- Some third-party widgets: embedded Mapbox controls and Google Analytics overlays follow their vendor's accessibility maturity, which can lag our own. We choose vendors with strong accessibility roadmaps and re-evaluate annually.
Testing approach
Every page change is tested with:
- Keyboard-only navigation across the full path of the change;
- VoiceOver (macOS, iOS) and NVDA (Windows) screen readers on the critical user flows (search, listing detail, lead form, VOW consent);
- Automated checks via Lighthouse and axe-core in CI;
- Contrast validation in the design system before any token change ships.
For listing photos sourced from the TRREB MLS® feed, we generate descriptive alt text programmatically because the feed itself does not include alt text. If you encounter a photo where the alt text is unhelpful, please let us know — we will improve the generation rule for that listing type.
Requesting an alternate format or help
